Romeo and Juliet
Verona / Teatro NuovoThe Kings Theatre Portsmouth and Teatro Stabile del Veneto are joining forces to bring Italian and English Language productions of the most famous romantic tragedy ever written, Romeo and Juliet, to its original setting.
This summer visitors to Verona will be able to see, for the first time, an abridged promenade production of Romeo and Juliet in and around one of the most beautiful locations in Verona, Teatro Stabile, home of Juliet’s courtyard, balcony and statue.
The Italian cast of established theatre actors will be performing in Italian from 25 June – 27 July, and 19 August – 28 September. From the 29 July – 17 August 2015 it will be performed in English, by three young actors fresh from drama school. David Cooper, Chief Executive of the Kings Theatre Portsmouth said “We were hoping to find three talented young actors just starting out in their acting careers – and are delighted to have succeeded and that this truly unique production will be the first professional acting job for the chosen actors.”
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
“It’s been 25 years since our first show of Romeo and Juliet.
I am proud to perform this play again as my first show for Teatro Stabile del Veneto, and to stage it in the historical places where Shakespeare really set the tragedy: with a brand new cast and big enthusiasm for this masterpiece, this immortal love story will continue to enchant by touching everybody’s heart and you will fall in love with Shakespeare and Theatre.”
Paolo Valerio – director
“Romeo and Juliet are here, real and alive: Shakespeare’s genius give them a sort of tridimensionality, enough to justify our desire to see them in real places, in the real Verona.”
Ettore Capriolo – journalist
